Hunting safaris where two rivers meet

Authentic field experiences shaped by ethical hunting, professional guidance and the landscapes of the Northern Cape.

“You arrive as clients and leave as family.”

Our philosophy

A relationship, not a transaction

Choose how you’d like to experience Bateleur: through hunting, fishing, wingshooting or a combination of all three, and partners who don’t hunt have day experiences of their own. Every experience is tailored around you, with personalised guidance from our experienced team.

Bateleur is an ethics-led outfitter. Every hunt is fair chase, conducted with respect for the animal and the land, and planned around conservation rather than numbers.

Expect professional standards in the field and a relaxed, authentic feel back at Bateleur Lodge. We take a limited number of guests each season so that every safari stays personal, whether this is your first hunt or your fiftieth.

Africa is calling

Out on the open plains

Springbok moving across the wide-open plains of the Northern Cape. When the herd starts moving, you don’t rush it, you take it in.

27 seconds, filmed in 4K in the Northern Cape. We can film your own hunt too.

The game

Plains game & buffalo

We offer a diverse selection of plains game and dangerous game across riverine areas, open plains and rolling hills, giving each hunt its own character and challenge. Most safaris are combination hunts, planned with your PH around the species you are after. The full species list and trophy fees are in the 2026 price list further down this page.

Plains game

Open country, long stalks

Classic Northern Cape plains game across open ground, river bush and rolling hills.

Success rate: very high.

Dangerous game

Buffalo, hunted properly

With dangerous game the focus is on a quality pursuit of mature animals, not a quick result. Your PH sets the pace and calls the shot.

  • Cape buffalo

Emphasis: mature animals, fair chase.

How we hunt

Earned on foot, fair chase

Walk-and-stalk
Follow spoor and wind on foot through river bush and broken ground until you are close enough for an ethical shot.
Spot-and-stalk
Glass the plains and hillsides from a vantage point, then plan the approach and make it on foot.

Both are fair chase. Every hunt is planned around the species, terrain and conditions of the day, with your professional hunter guiding each step. The focus is not only on the pursuit, but on a respectful, rewarding and memorable experience in the field, so first-time hunters are as welcome as old hands.

Beyond the rifle

River & wing

Two great rivers meet in Bateleur country. Add a day on the water or a walked-up shoot to your safari, or come for these alone.

Orange River fishing

A relaxed change of pace and time on the water. Each outing is shaped around the conditions, the location and the experience level of the group, rewarding for seasoned anglers, unhurried for anyone simply after a peaceful day outdoors.

  • Yellowfish
  • Catfish
  • Carp
  • Mudfish

Wingshooting

Walked-up bird hunting in season, guided with the same focus on safety, respect and ethical practice as every Bateleur hunt. Each outing is shaped by the terrain, the conditions and the movement of the birds, challenging for experienced shots, enjoyable for first-timers.

  • Seasonal geese
  • Guinea fowl
  • Pheasant

Firearms

Bring your own, or hire ours

Option one

Bring your own rifle

Visiting hunters need a SAPS 520 temporary import permit. We walk you through the process and refer you to trusted permit specialists who can arrange it ahead of time.

Option two

Hire on arrival

Rifles and ammunition can be hired at Bateleur, so you travel light and skip the import paperwork entirely.

Yes. First-time hunters are very welcome, our professional hunters teach as they guide, from practice on the range to the stalk itself.

Which species can I hunt?

Plains game such as kudu, gemsbok, springbok and wildebeest, plus buffalo. The full species list and trophy fees are in the 2026 price list on this page, which you can also download as a PDF.

Can I hunt more than one species?

Yes. Combination hunts are the norm, most guests hunt several species on one safari, planned with their PH.

What hunting methods do you use?

Walk-and-stalk and spot-and-stalk, always on fair-chase terms.

Can I bring my own rifle?

Yes, on a SAPS 520 temporary import permit. We guide you through the paperwork and refer you to permit specialists. Rifles and ammunition can also be hired instead.

Can non-hunters come along?
