Who we are

Professional in the field, at home in camp

Africa is experienced slowly, personally and with people you trust. Bateleur Hunting Safaris is a hunting outfitter and luxury lodge near Douglas in the Northern Cape, where the Orange and Vaal Rivers meet. The country here is riverine corridors, open plains and rolling hills.

We built Bateleur around fair chase, conservation and respect for wildlife, and around the warm, personal hospitality Africa is known for. We keep professional standards in the field and a relaxed, authentic feel at camp.

We host a limited number of guests each season, so every stay stays personal.

Our promise

More than a hunt. It’s a relationship, where stories are shared and clients become family.

Watch

The heart of the hunt

Mattie Lotter has guided for more than 16 years across Southern Africa. In this short film he explains why the hardest part of a hunt isn’t the shot, it’s creating a respectful, emotional moment that becomes a lifelong memory.

It also tells the story of the vision behind Bateleur, set by owner Wynand: farming, nature and forward thinking, turned into a destination for ethical hunting, fishing, wingshooting and conservation through sustainable use.

What we stand for

How we do things

  1. 01

    Fair chase

We hunt on foot, by walk-and-stalk and spot-and-stalk, on the animal’s terms.

  2. 02

    Conservation

Ethical, sustainable hunting that looks after the land and the game on it.

  3. 03

    Respect for wildlife

With dangerous game, we pursue mature animals and value the hunt over the result.

  4. 04

    Real hospitality

Warm, personal African hospitality from people who are glad you came.

  5. 05

    Professional standards

Experienced professional hunters and a team that sweats the details.

  6. 06

    A personal scale

A limited number of guests each season, so no one is just a booking.

The name

Named for the bird that owns this sky

The bateleur is one of Africa’s most striking eagles: black plumage, a chestnut back and a bright red face and feet. Its name comes from the French for “street performer”, after the way it tilts and rocks its wings in flight.

It spends much of the day on the wing, gliding low over open country, watchful, unhurried and completely at home. That is the kind of hunting we believe in.

Rooted in South Africa

Set in the heart of the Northern Cape

Where the Orange River meets wide-open landscapes, Bateleur offers space, stillness and an experience that feels authentically African. The lodge lies near the town of Douglas, where the Orange and Vaal Rivers come together and river corridors give way to open plains and rolling hills.

The setting is remote and quiet, yet accessible enough for guests travelling from major centres.

Fly in by private charter from Johannesburg in about 1h30, or take a scheduled flight to Kimberley and a private transfer of about 1h20.
